In this course students will design and produce functional objects, for hypothetical clients, to solve design problems, using laser cutting and 3D printing technologies. Design work will focus on the characteristics and properties of the materials, systems, components, tools and equipment used to create designed solutions in product design. Students will use a range of increasingly sophisticated technologies, including a variety of graphical representation techniques, to generate and represent original ideas and production plans in two-dimensional and three-dimensional representations. They will use relevant design computer software and create prototypes that they will test and evaluate. Products will be designed with consideration of economic, environmental and social sustainability.

Design in Year Nine involves creating and experimenting with projects that are unique and allow for development of personal style through experimenting and problem solving. Design offers a hands on experience with working with digital technology to create physical items. It aids in development in problem solving, creativity and working with briefs to prepare for year 10 and ATAR Design.
