Year 10 Dance builds on the principles of BEST learned in year 7-9.

Dance is a year-long course where students refine and extend their dance skills in specific dance styles and technique. There is a focus on clarity of movement, expression, and musicality. Students will explore choreography and creative processes and will be expected to work in a team devising and presenting their own work. This course is very performance based and practical, although students also practice analysis skills in studying the work of specific choreographers.

The frequency of this subject is TWO periods per week.

“Forget your troubles and dance” – Bob Marley. This statement could not be more accurate for dance at Mercedes College. Dance is something I look forward to every week, as there is always a new sequence to learn, or unexpected fun to be had. I think it’s one of the best ways to disconnect from the daily pressures of school life, easily getting lost in the steps and beat of the music. There is such privilege in knowing you have a dance family within the school community, where you can move with individualistic intention in a safe space. I believe dance is a really special subject, allowing you to enhance your knowledge of different styles, and relish in the enjoyment of movement. The one thing I absolutely love about dance, is that there is no pressure to be anyone but yourself, which you portray in several stylistic arrangements, a concept which I find uniquely exceptional. Dance at Mercedes College is worth every minute, providing dancers and non-dancers alike, a creative space to imagine and develop. – Ella Lech

Suitable for students who may wish to study either General Dance or ATAR Dance as well as those who just enjoy performing and increasing their dance skills.
