Politics and Law is a critical study of the way power and decision making in our nation is organised and how disagreements within our society are settled. It examines the style of government we have, the powers of our parliaments and the people. It also examines the types of disputes that can arise in our society and the ways that these are settled. The skills and values developed throughout the course allow students to become even more informed, active and effective participants at school, in their career and as citizens at local, state, national and international levels.

In Year 11 Students will study:

  • Democracy and the Rule of Law through which students examine how Australia works as a democracy and how its legal system operates and compares to other nations.
  • Representation and Justice through which students critically examine the principles of representation, justice in civil and criminal law, electoral systems and alternatives.

In Year 12 students will study Political and Legal Power, which focuses in on the Australian constitution, and Rights and Governance.

Politics and Law has been an extremely enjoyable and beneficial subject that has allowed me to better understand the political and legal systems of both Australia and other countries such as America. I have gained new skills which have been extremely valuable in many other subjects, including ATAR Literature and Religion and Life. I would highly recommend politics for students who enjoy learning about how the world works, because for me, politics has been a very interesting course in which I have learnt so much.
